RAES Member Countries Launch Regional Agenda to Strengthen Sustainable School Feeding

Document jointly developed by member countries will be presented during a virtual event on June 18.

Brasília, Brazil, 28 May 2026 – The 18 member countries of the Sustainable School Feeding Network (RAES) have developed and validated a regional agenda aimed at strengthening school feeding programmes in their countries and across Latin America and the Caribbean. The document will be officially presented during a virtual event on 18 June.

RAES is a trilateral South-South cooperation initiative on school feeding promoted by the Government of Brazil, through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE) and the National Fund for Educational Development of the Ministry of Education (FNDE/MEC), together with member countries in the region, with the executive secretariat by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Strategic instrument
The agenda brings together priorities and lines of action focused on strengthening and ensuring the sustainability of school feeding public policies in the region. The document, entitled “RAES Regional Agenda: For Sustainable School Feeding in Latin America and the Caribbean 2026–2030”, aims to guide and coordinate actions to strengthen school feeding by aligning and harmonizing national priorities with other policies and strategies that support food and nutrition security, healthy diets, and sustainability, based on a shared regional vision.

RAES member countries agreed that having a Regional Agenda will help strengthen the institutional framework and governance of school feeding, optimize resources, generate synergies among countries, and increase the visibility of this policy as a driver of sustainable development.

In addition to presenting the document, the 18 June event seeks to position the Regional Agenda as a reference framework to guide school feeding public policies, promoting their integration into national agendas and their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Regional Agenda consolidates national and regional priorities, addresses common regional challenges, and reflects a shared vision aimed at strengthening the sustainability, quality, and impact of these programmes. In this sense, such a document constitutes a key roadmap for advancing towards more sustainable agrifood systems and ensuring the well-being of future generations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Thematic areas
Seven priority thematic areas were defined: management and governance, healthy diets, regulatory frameworks, financing, public procurement from family farming, monitoring and evaluation, and food, nutrition, and environmental education.

Participants
Representatives from governments, academia, consortia, and institutions linked to school feeding are expected to participate, as well as representatives from RAES member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, FAO technical officers and specialists, and professionals involved in school feeding programmes.
