The fifth edition of the International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day to be held on 3 and 4 October, in person in Chile and with live streaming, will emphasise the critical need for funding to drive efforts to reduce food loss and waste, contribute to the achievement of climate goals and advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The objective of the event is i) to raise awareness on the effects of ADPs and the relevance of addressing them from the public sector and other sectors of the agri-food, climate and food security systems; ii) to discuss the relevance of ADPs and share experiences, concrete actions and lessons learned for the prevention and reduction of ADPs at regional level among the actors of the agri-food system; iii) to have the support of countries with background and validated tools for the quantification and monitoring of indicator 12.3.
During the first day, there will be a high-level meeting with different representatives from the region and technical sessions that will address actions against ADPs and the challenges in the region to prevent and reduce them.
The sessions will include spaces for the exchange of experiences among participants, working groups and round tables that will facilitate questions and answers with audience interaction.
In addition, there will be a communication activity to raise awareness of PDA, consisting of refreshments on Thursday 3 October, with a chef specialising in making the most of all food, focusing on nutritious and healthy preparations, as well as a talk on recipes and menus to innovate without wasting food.
On the second day there will be a field trip to show technological or innovative advances in Chilean companies or institutions to prevent and reduce food losses and/or waste.

- Measurement and data on ADP.
- Legislative and regulatory developments on ADP.
- Circular initiatives to combat ADP.
- Civil society movements combating food waste.
The event seeks to articulate the actions of various actors in the agri-food system in the region. During the days of the event, delegates from the governments of: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Uruguay and CARICOM, as well as representatives of local governments, food industry both retail and manufacturing, entrepreneurs, academia, civil society and international cooperation. The event will be broadcast live, via streaming on FAO channels.
