Event of the Healthy Life Course focus on the importance of legal frameworks in school feeding

Final event of the 3rd version of the course will discuss the role of regulatory frameworks in the school feeding policy

Brasília, Brazil, August 16, 2022. The third version of the course “School Feeding as an Educational Strategy for a Healthy Life” will present at its closing a lecture that will discuss the role of regulatory frameworks in school feeding.

The purpose of the presentation is to share and present experiences about the elaboration and implementation of legal and regulatory frameworks, in addition to identifying some fundamental elements for its construction, as well as challenges that are usually faced along the way. The class will be broadcast live on Twitter @BrasilFAOCoop and on the YouTube of UNFAO, starting at 3 p.m. (Chilean time).

This year, the course was offered to four countries – Colombia, Guatemala, Peru and the Dominican Republic – in order to address fundamental and emerging issues related to School Feeding Programmes (SFPs) in the region. Nearly 3,200 professionals strengthened their skills through the course. In the two previous editions, almost 5,000 professionals from different LAC countries participated.

The course is promoted by the regional project Consolidation of School Feeding Programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean, executed within the framework of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Programme. The actions are jointly organized by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE), by the National Fund for Educational Development of the Ministry of Education (FNDE/MEC), by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and by the participating countries.

The lecture on regulatory frameworks for school feeding will be presented by Manuela Cuvi, FAO legal officer and expert on this topic, who will highlight how legislation can be an instrument to promote healthy diets in schools. Representatives of the governments of Colombia, Guatemala, Peru and the Dominican Republic will also have space to share their perspectives on the theme. And the students will have time to share how this course will improve their professional practices.

The course School Feeding as an Educational Strategy for a Healthy Life seeks to promote reflection and understanding about the importance of public school feeding policies as strategies to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), food and nutritional security, education, health, nutrition and social protection, including in the context of pandemic and post-pandemic.

In addition, the training has the objective of strengthening the capacities of professionals in the areas of nutrition, education, health, agriculture and others for the development, implementation and monitoring of food and nutrition education (FNE) actions within the framework of school feeding programmes.
