Linking family farming to school feeding programmes is the subject of an exchange among countries

A webinar will be held on March 21st featuring experiences from Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala and Peru.

Brasília, Brazil, March 12, 2024 – Discussing how to strengthen the marketing of products from family farming for school feeding programmes is the goal of a webinar to be held on March 21st. The action is part of a series of three experience exchanges with Latin American countries promoted by FAO and the governments of Colombia, Ecuador and El Salvador.

The organization of this virtual event is led by FAO’s Representation in El Salvador and the Food Coalition. The initiative is supported by the Sustainable School Feeding Network (RAES), a strategy driven by the Government of Brazil, through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the National Fund for Educational Development (FNDE), with the support and secretariat of FAO, through the project Sustainable School Feeding Regional Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event will feature testimonials from farmers and cooperatives that supply products to school feeding. Technicians from various government areas and different countries will also participate, sharing their experiences on the relationship between family farming and school feeding. High-level professionals from Brazil, Guatemala and Peru, as well as a cooperative from El Salvador, will be present.

The objectives of the event include: (i) contextualizing how school feeding represents an opportunity in climate action, malnutrition, and more sustainable production models; (ii) facilitating practical mechanisms for countries to implement public procurement of fresh foods from family farming to strengthen school feeding; (iii) identifying innovative solutions that countries can use as a reference in implementing public procurement of fresh foods.

The first webinar in this series of exchanges addressed the importance of regulatory frameworks to strengthen school feeding and promote the guarantee of the human right to adequate food, with experiences from three countries.

Food Coalition

In 2021, Colombia, Ecuador, and El Salvador, through FAO representations and in conjunction with national governments, expressed interest in developing the project “Strengthening school feeding programmes during and after the COVID-19 pandemic,” which seeks to unite efforts to strengthen and scale up school feeding programmes through the Sustainable Schools methodology in order to contribute to the guarantee of human right to adequate food. The three countries are supported by the Food Coalition in the implementation of this methodology, developed by the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation in 2012 and already present in 14 countries.

The Food Coalition promoted by FAO is a global alliance of multiple stakeholders to respond to and recover from COVID-19. This initiative aims to mobilize financial resources, innovations, and technical competencies, promote advocacy activities, and establish a neutral space for dialogue among a variety of key stakeholders in support of the countries that need it most.
