On 13 and 14 December 2023, the National Forum on School Feeding _History and Perspectives in Paraguay will take place, an event promoted by the Ministry of Education and Science, with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO.
The Paraguayan School Feeding Programme (PAEP) aims to ensure that school meals are provided in an educational, nutritional and culturally appropriate environment, enabling the acquisition of healthy eating habits and lifestyles to reduce the incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and others.
This public policy, which guarantees the human right to food, aims to stimulate the promotion of sustainable development by contributing to the local economy, by promoting the supply of healthy food for school meals from various sectors such as family farming (FFA), and by supporting the integral formation of the social capital involved in the process of producing, distributing, preparing and serving food, thus improving the quality of life and promoting production systems with less environmental impact.
The aim of the Forum is to position the PAEP as a public policy with an educational approach to guarantee the human right to healthy food for students in educational institutions in the Republic of Paraguay. In addition, the next steps will be defined to strengthen the implementation of the PAEP in order to ensure access, reduce absenteeism and retain students in the national education system.
On 13 December we will have the participation of Najla Veloso, coordinator of school feeding programmes for LAC of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation; Israel Rios, regional nutrition officer for LAC in FAO, authorities of the government of Paraguay from the Ministry of Education and Science, representatives of FAO a nd other international organizations and the government of Brazil.
