School of Flavours: 4th edition of the school cooks’ reality show premieres on 20 December

Production highlights the knowledge of Indigenous, Quilombola and riverine communities and higlight the importance of school meals

The fourth edition of the reality show portraying the lives of school cooks involved in school feeding premieres this Saturday, 20 December. In this new phase, the project is renamed School of Flavours and expands its format, highlighting the leading role of professionals from Indigenous, Quilombola and riverine communities, as well as emphasising the essential role of school meals in the lives of millions of Brazilian students.

School of Flavours is the result of a partnership between the National Fund for Educational Development (FNDE), an autonomous agency linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC); the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE); and the Centre of Excellence Against Hunger of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP Brazil). The initiative aims to value and give visibility to the work of school cooks, nutritionists and managers who are directly involved in implementing the national school feeding policy.

Broadcast on Saturdays at 12:00 on Band and at 21:00 on the Sabor & Arte channel, the reality show will feature eight weekly episodes, with reruns on Sundays at 20:00 on the Terraviva channel in Brazil. In each episode, participants face culinary challenges inspired by schools, territories, traditions and local ingredients, portraying Brazil’s cultural and food diversity.

In addition to valuing the food cultures of Indigenous, Quilombola and riverine peoples, the programme reinforces the importance of South-South Cooperation in strengthening public policies on school feeding, highlighting the exchange of experiences and good practices among countries that adopt the Brazilian model as a reference.

The programme marks a new phase of a project that has already had three previous seasons in different formats, including the Vida de Merendeira reality show, broadcast last year on the Sabor & Arte channel. Now, with an enhanced competitive structure and expanded narrative focus, the production reaffirms school feeding as a pillar of education, health, and food and nutrition security.

Produced by Newco, a programmer and production company of the Bandeirantes Group, School of Flavours was filmed at Band studios in São Paulo and features the participation of special guests from the culinary world, who join the jury in evaluating the challenges. Among the challenges are ancestral dishes, recipes using food reuse, and healthy preparations, always aligned with the principles of school feeding.
