{"id":26721,"date":"2025-04-10T14:45:24","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T17:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/redraes.org\/food-and-nutrition-education-is-a-reality-in-all-schools-of-capitao-leonidas-marques-in-brazil\/"},"modified":"2025-04-10T14:48:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T17:48:23","slug":"food-and-nutrition-education-is-a-reality-in-all-schools-of-capitao-leonidas-marques-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redraes.org\/en\/food-and-nutrition-education-is-a-reality-in-all-schools-of-capitao-leonidas-marques-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Food and Nutrition Education Is a Reality in all Schools of Capit\u00e3o Le\u00f4nidas Marques, in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Public education in this Brazilian city currently serves 1,820 students.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paulo Beraldo<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bras\u00edlia, Brazil, April 10, 2025 <\/strong>\u2013 Since 2016, all nine public schools in the municipality of Capit\u00e3o Le\u00f4nidas Marques, in the countryside of Paran\u00e1, southern Brazil, have implemented food and nutrition education (FNE) activities in their teaching practices, thanks to a municipal legal framework that regulated the <em>Healthy Eating<\/em> project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project aims to integrate food and nutrition education into all subjects in elementary and early childhood education, expanding its impact not only within the school community but across the entire population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe seek to continue the actions developed in our school feeding programme and promote the construction of critical knowledge related to food and nutrition,\u201d explains nutritionist \u00c9lister Balestrin, who works in the municipal programme. Public education in Capit\u00e3o Le\u00f4nidas Marques currently serves 1,820 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"564\" src=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-7.png 864w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-7-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-7-768x501.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the city, all schools organize activities in October to celebrate World Food Day, a date established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The municipal school feeding division prepares a project with suggested activities based on the annual theme defined by FAO, so schools can develop their own programmes. \u201cAll schools participate \u2014 the teachers, the pedagogical coordinators, the students, parents, and also the family farmers who supply the food,\u201d says the nutritionist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to \u00c9lister, the planning of FNE actions takes into account the need to encourage student participation through both practical and theoretical approaches, emphasizing the importance of food, quality nutrition, and the risks of malnutrition, within the framework of the human right to adequate and healthy food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"844\" height=\"704\" src=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-6.png 844w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-6-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-6-768x641.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 844px) 100vw, 844px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FNE: From Schools to Homes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the activities carried out in the schools are: mobilization of education professionals and students in FNE practices; teaching about the social, cultural, geographical, and historical aspects of food production; strengthening school community relations; addressing food and its context in the classroom; training multipliers of FNE actions; promoting discussions on sustainable development, environment, climate change, food waste, land use, and agroecology; and valuing family farming, among others. \u201cWe want students to take this knowledge home and share it with their families,\u201d says \u00c9lister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nutritionist explains that the municipality has a strong relationship with local family farming and invests 100% of the federal resources received from the National Fund for Educational Development (FNDE), through the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE), in the purchase of food from local family farmers. Currently, 27 families sell their products to the municipality\u2019s public school system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"855\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-8.png 855w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-8-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/redraes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-8-768x425.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFamily farmers are encouraged to take part in FNE activities. They are always recognized and valued. We bring producers into the schools and take students to visit the farms where the food they eat is produced. It\u2019s a moment of curiosity and joy for both sides,\u201d she comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience of Capit\u00e3o Le\u00f4nidas Marques gained national and international recognition when the city participated in the reality show \u2018Cooks of Brazil\u2019, organized by the FNDE to highlight food policy and the work of school cooks and nutritionists involved in PNAE. In September 2023, the city presented its experience at an event in Panama City, organized by the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation.
